June 19, this day is a celebration of freedom from slavery and is the oldest African-American holiday.

A month-long national celebration of African American musicians, singers and composers, and the contributions they have made and continue to make to the nation's musical history. President Jimmy Carter issued a decree June 7, 1979 establishing this national recognition.
